Agneepath – where Vijay Chavan is killed by the Director

People say not to compare old and new version of film but why shouldn’t we? The filmmaker has named it the same, the storyline is same, the name of the characters are same, its set in the same timeframe. If the filmmaker has no issues in cashing out the brand ‘Agneepath’ then why shouldnt we compare?

Now, lets do it one by one..
The character of Vijay Dinanath Chavan is icnoic and made legendary by AB with his
mannerisms, dialogue delivery, style but in thie new Agneepath poor Hrithik Roshan can
hardly claim any of that. He is shown as a cunning, plotting sidekick of a ganglord
played by Rishi Kapoor. He reduces this icnoic character to an ordinary one. Hrithik
Roshan accpeted this role reluctantly after hearing the 2 Karans ( Director and
Producer). I really want to know what convinced him to do such a thing. Was it the
money? The chance to copy AB?, the chance to make a masala movie which would do 100 crore ? or simply because he wanted to annoy AB and his fans. He is shown to be
dancing, singing, crying, plotting and doing things which the ‘true’ Vijay Chavan would
not do in his dreams. He just destroys the character along with the Director-Producer.

The role of childhood Vijay in original AGNEEPATH was played by Manjunath who was
coming from his immense success of Malgudi Days. That role set the tone for AB to take
it over. There was a gradual progression into the role, the same kind of graduation
from childhood to adulthood is not there in this new version.

Rohini Hattangadi played an important role of AB’s mother and the kind of connect
mother-son had in that film is lacking totally with Zaeena Wahab and Hrithik. Rohini
Hattangadi’s ‘Hath Dho Le’ dialogue still echoes.

Romance in earlier film was non-existent and rightly. This kind of film does not need
romantic sidetrack and entire character of Priyanka Chopra was unneceessary. She was
plain irritating at times and doing nothing apart from cracking silly jokes, dancing
around and then getting killed in pre-climax, a scene which reminded us of much
powerful ‘Parinda’. The way Priyanka and Hrithik dance and sing and emote you feel you
are in a Yash Chopra romantic film instead of a gripping thriller.

Character of Kancha Cheena played by Danny in the original was legendary too, he had a
certain style and attitude, he loved good things in life stayed in a glass house in
mauratius where as Sanjubaba plays it exactly the opposite here and hams it to the
hilt. He looked silly and clownish and reminded me of his act in ‘Khalnayak’.

Rishi Kapoor as Rauf Lala was a new character and I must say he did a very nice job in
portraying the evil role, tries to be mean and tries to show his versatility as an
actor but he is too cute a guy to be taken sriously as a villain and his cuddly,
romantic image is too overpowering in our minds. Still, I think his was the only
redeeming factor in this collosal disaster of a movie.

Om Puri plays caroonish cop once again and his Gaitonde was no match against original
Gaitonde played by Vikram Gokhale who had the look of an honest upright cop, who
fathers over Vijay Chavan.

Where are the dialogues?? The original film had dialogues which are memorable till
date. The exchange between Vijay and Gaitonde, Vijay and Kancha, Vijay and his mom are
still viewed by millions on Youtube. Dialogues in this film are by theater veteran
Piyush Mishra but sadly not a single dialogue is worth remembering. He just cannot match
up Kadar Khan, a true legend when it comes to dialogue writing in Hindi Cinema.

The original had other important characters like Mithunda (done away with ) , Archana
Puran singh ( done away and partly replaced by Katrinaji), Goga Kapoor as Dinkar Rao (
played by Kancha’s dad here) and several more like Sharat Saxena, Avtar Gill and Deepak
Shirke…

And then there are questions and huge plotholes which no one can answer…
like …

1) WTF is Vijay doing in first half of the film? If all he wants is to kill Kancha,
then he could have very well asked his mentor Rishi Kapoor to help him do that, Rauf
Lala always hated Kancha. Why all the drama of ‘gaining his trust’ by taking a bullet,
then backstabbing him and then saying things like ‘ I do not need Rauf Lala’s approval
for anything…Vijay Chavan is shown in pain all the time, almost pitying himself and
crying at the drop of a hat..why have they made him a pussycat and just a henchman.

2) How the F… does he reach Mandwa ?? The place is an island, heavily guarded but not
only he reaches there but plants bombs everywhere and generally manages to reach
Kancha’s throne in his den even before anyone realises…!! He wwears Rishi Kapoor’s
shoes – were they flying shoes??

3)Sanjay dutt beats up Hrithik to pulp and even stabs him multiple times and all
Hrithik does is hit him once and then lifts him and hangs him..how did that happen? did
the director decide, enough was enough, lets just end the film !!

4) The villagers first side with Masterji, then turn on him and hangs him and supports
Sanjubaba all these years and then suddenly when Hrithik comes , they suddenly change
their loyalty !! Must be cocaine..they were growing..

5) Cocaine being grown in large amount in an island right opposite Mumbai for years and
Police doesnt do a thing..its cocaine factory !!..not some desi sharab ka
karkhana..wow !!

6) Police and inspector Gaitonde are shown such dumb and what happens to them in the
end? where are they? werent they suppose to attack Mandwa post Ganesh Visarjan? Di Om Puri run out of dates?

7) Hrithik aka Vijay Chavan – what exactly he does to redeem himself? for 15 years he
has been sidekick of rishi kapoor selling cocaine and under aged girls and then
suddenly he is the messiah of the masses ? ‘Sau chuhe maar ke billi hajj ko chali’

Its such a badly made and long movie that I can go on and on with plotholes…The
diting is cut randomly making it a real random film.
Agreed that the original wasnt the best of the movie but AB’s performance, Danny,
Mithun , Kadar Khan’s dialogues, Mukul Anand’s direction and shot taking made it a
special film. The Original was inspired from ‘Scarface’ and it wasnt perfect but still
a movie made well-ahead of its times. Sadly this new version has nothing. They just
killed the icnoic ‘Vijay Chavan’ character.

Yash Johar must be turning in his grave or wherever he is. Karan Johar might get the
money but he has failed as a filmmaker.

My biggest question in the end is why the f… is the film called Agneepath , the
characters are nothing like original, then why not name Hrithik Roshan – Raj Singhania
, call the villain Ballu and get it done easily. Its just that the producer wanted to
encash the brand which they are doing. They have marketed the brand succesfully, hyped
up the film and then there is ‘chikni chameli’ to bring in the front benchers running
to the single screen and thats about it nowadays to get huge opening. Huge opening is
not the sign of a good film, just the sign of succesful marketing and hype creating.

Lasly, this ‘agony path’ will make 100 crores at box office but then so did Bodyguard,
Ra.One, Ready, Golmaal Returns and Singham…Case rested !!

AGONY PATH………….’Karan Johar ki Aag’
P.S. I had a GREAT time watching the film in the theater, as everybody was laughing at  the film and passing interesting comments which made the 2 and half hours bearable.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara – Trailer

Here’s the awaited summer blockbuster. ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ stars Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol Katrina Kaif and Kalki in a road movie set in Spain. The film directed by Zoya Akhtar relases on July 15 and promises lots of eye-candy, masala entertainment and youth centric theme of going on an all boys trip. Sounds suspiciously similar to first half of Dil Chahta Hai and Hollywood film Hangover. Hopefully Zoya Akhtar director of ‘Luck by Chance’ will not disappoint and it wont be a copy of any film we have seen but something original.

Spain countryside looks pleasant and the 3 stars shine along with both the female leads. It does indeed look an upmarket product.

Guzaarish – Beauty sans Soul

Guzaarish is the new ‘art painting’ created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. In making this film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is inspired from opulent drama sets and Broadway musicals and is also clearly inspired from various international films like ‘The Prestige’ and the ‘Sea Inside’. The films storyline  and plot is taken mainly from the above 2 films.

Hrithik Roshan plays a magician who meets an accident and becomes quadriplegic from waist down. Aishwarya Rai is the nurse who takes care of him for 12 long years. Hrithik’s Ethan Mascarenhas is a survivor, fighter and doesn’t give up on life and becomes a Radio Jockey inspiring people, advising them about life and freedom and fun all the while being on a wheelchair. But then one fine day he decides to appeal to the court to allow him to die, justifying mercy-killing for someone like him who has suffered enough. The basic plot is alright but is clearly inspired from various sources and this plot is stretched right from the beginning to the end. There are other unwanted sub-plots such as a rival magician, Aishwarya Rai’s bully husband, Hrithik’s assistant and so on. They have nothing much to contribute to the main plot.

Nothing is original here, not the story, not the situations. The setting is a remote palatial home somewhere in Goa, straight out of a drama or perhaps remainder of the director’s past venture ‘Black’. The sets and the clothes and the acting everything looks artificial. The setting is Anglo-Indian and characters are undefined including ridiculous Nafisa Ali as mother, who stays away from Hrithik for the reasons nobody knows. Then there is hyper Jennifer Patel as the lawyer who behaves more like a school principal. She is certainly a stupid lawyer. Aditya Roy Kapoor is simply there because he is the producer’s brother and his afro hair cut and speech makes him look like a ‘south bombay yuppie’ more than a Goan magician. Suhel Seth as doctor takes the cake though. He is completely lost and a crying Suhel Seth evokes laughter in the audience. He was perhaps missing Arnab Goswami to argue with. The entire film, its sets and characters and ridiculous trial in court looks fake. The quadriplegic issue is almost ridiculed here. The film is like a body without a soul.

The only thing that  lifts the movie a bit are some scenes and the lead actor. What can one say about Hrithik Roshan who puts his heart and soul and whole body behind the role of a person destined to be in the wheelchair for life. He is intense and at times over-intense but he is the saving grace of the film. Aishwarya Rai is actually ‘good’ as compared to her other roles and is infact quite well cast in the nurse’s role. Other actors like Nafisa Ali, Makrand Deshpande, Jennifet Patel have little to do. Aditya Roy Kapoor as the young magician is okay in a limited role and looks quite amateurish, perhaps a better actor would have done the role in a mature way and Victoria’s Secret girl Monikangna Dutta is hardly noticeable. Chemistry between the lead pair is quite nice though like most of their past films done together.

Coming to the director, why oh why does someone as talented as Sanjay Leela Bhansali does this over and over? He creates a beautiful art form but then it doesn’t have life in it. He creates artificial world of his own and there  is absolutely no connect with today’s audience.  You feel bad for Hrithik’s character at the start but by the end of the film there is hardly any sympathy for him, one doesn’t feel like crying even when he is about to die. The feelings are all artificial here and the director is trying too much to evoke sympathy. The director is trying to create one masterpiece after other  without realizing that audiences are seeing through his work. He is trying to show-off his technical skills, which must agree are great to look at, but he has forgotten one basic ingredient in his past few films and that is entertainment. There is seriously no entertainment in his past few films including this one. You do not have to make a dull, boring movie if you are tackling a serious disease, you can make it heartwarming and interesting, prime example being ‘Taare Zameen Par’ which dealt with Dyslexia in a positive way.

He is also the music director, screenplay writer, story writer and whatever else that comes to your mind about film making. The music is average and you hardly remember a tune once the movie is over. In fact some of the songs are actually harsh and hurting to the ears. He goes into unwanted detailing at times which are clearly not needed. What we needed was a simple story, more realistic, more touching our heart. Clearly the filmmaker is in his own little narcissist world.

My Ratings : 5.675/10 –  Beautiful but slow and a blatant copy. Body minus the soul.

P.S. Watch ‘ The Prestige’ to understand the world of magicians, its a masterpiece.

Guzaarish – First Promo

Here’s unveiling the first promo of one of the most anticipated film of the year. Guzaarish stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai and is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film releases on 19th November 2010

Hrithik plays a paraplegic and Aishwarya plays his nurse. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is also the music director of the film.

Raavan aur Badmaash Company ki Rajneeti ne Kites ko Housefull kar diya

IPL is over, well almost. The Films are back. Since last 6 weeks or so thanks to the IPL, barring few low budget movies, art-house cinema stuff, made-for-multiplex movies and Prince ( don’t know  which category that film can be in….maybe absurd) no major films released.

From Next Friday this drought would be hopefully over starting with Housefull starring Akshay Kumar and gang ,directed by Sajid Khan, the film will open to full houses thanks to the songs, the stars, big budget setup, funny promos and a recent drought of quality film entertainment. Will it live up to the hype is another story.

Next up is Yash Raj venture Badmaash Company starring Shahid Kapur, Anushka Sharma and directed by Parmeet Sethi this film is targeted towards youth with its young starcast, foregin locations, casinos and theft theme. The film has a young and fresh look and an average music but would certainly appeal all fans of such movies.

Kites will be the biggest release of the month starring Hrithik Roshan,  Barbara Mori and the rest. Hrithik Roshan has a great box-office pull and his last major release Jodhaa Akbar was couple of years ago ( if you do not count Luck by Chance – where he was more a supporting role) . This film with supposedly hot scenes of the leading pair, fantastic action and romance appeals to young and old. The film has an international song less version as well and would certainly open the biggest this year, at least so far.

Rajneeti is the first major release which comes 2 weeks after Kites and promises to be an interesting political thriller loosley based on the mega-epic Mahabharata and featuring hottest actors like Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah, Arjun Rampal , Katrina Kaif and this generation’s hottest young actor Ranbeer Kapoor in possibly a role with grey shades. This film based on Indian politics in the Hindi belt and directed by Prakash Jha is sure to attract both masses and classes to the cinema. People are loving the promos and cannot wait for it to release.

Mani Ratnam’s bilingual Raavan starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Govinda and ensemble cast is the next one, releasing on 18th June. This film based on another mega-epic Ramayana is shot simultaneously in both Hindi and Tamil, has music by A R Rehman and is a modern day adaptation of the epic from the point of view of Raavan. The film shot in jungle of Kerala and Madhya Pradesh would surely be the one to watch out for simple because of Mani Ratnam’s magical touch.

Thus the next 2 months promises to deliver great new exciting films to the lovers of Hindi Cinema and hopefully the box office will not remain barren for long time.

May the best film win.
